John served as aircrew on a short-service commission in the Royal Air Force, after which he became a journalist working on a London based newspaper and specialising in industrial and labour matters.
He left journalism to join the shipbuilding industry, initially working for national associations dealing with commercial and industrial relations affairs. When the then Government nationalised the industry, he joined firstly the Organising Committee for British Shipbuilders, and later, on completion of the Parliamentary processes the newly-formed British shipbuilders as Director for Corporate Affairs.
Leaving British Shipbuilders, he joined the Rover Group and was appointed to the Board with responsibility for corporate affairs.
It was while working on a project with Daniel Steenstra, then of Warwick Manufacturing Group at the University of Warwick, that John became convinced of the vital benefits that the use of design as a strategic tool could bring to European companies.
